‘No, thanks’, ‘No thanks’

Is there a difference with and without the comma?

I think:

'no, thanks' =

Joe: 'Do you want a slice of pizza?'

Mike: 'No, thanks.'

'no thanks' =

I received no thanks for the fine job I did.

I think that the inclusion/omission of the comma in each does in fact alter the meaning here.
