"no sooner.... than...."

Is it a must to use past perfect in the expression "no sooner.... than...."?
Ex.: no sooner had they entered the house than the phone rang.
Is it possible to use past simple instead of past perfect in such cases?
Is there any difference in usage of tenses in this expression in American and British English?
Thank you in advance! Emotion: smile
