No roads to travel by/on?

Hi, everyone.

There was no proper road to travel to the neighbouring village on.

You could also consider just saying "There was no proper road to the neighbouring village". Because we already know that roads are for travelling on, adding "to travel on/by" may not add a great deal extra.
