no more than & not more than

0 I've learned that 'no more than' means 'only' and 'not more than' means 'at most'.02br
00 Over the past few weeks I've been wondering why these two idioms are translated that way.02br
02br
00 I think 'not more than 5 kilograms' is '(not) + (more than 5 kilogram)' .02br
00 Therefore it means 'at most'. 02br
02br
00 Meanwhile, I guess 'no more than 5 kilograms' is '(no more)+(than 5 kilograms)'.02br
00 The 'no more' in this case is the same one in 'no more Mister Nice Guy'.02br
00 It means 'something no longer exists' from the speaker's subjective point of view.02br
00 Therefore, 'no more than' means 'only' because the speaker subjectively underrates the amount.02br
02br
00 Above is just an explanation and I'm not sure if it's correct.02br
00 However, I wanted to consider the structual difference between these two confusing idioms.02br
00 I was made to learn them by rote at high school, but it didn't work as I often forget which is which..02br
02br
00 If you have any opinions about these two idioms, let me know.0-
