No matter the future they fought him but never became him

In Hawk and Dove Annual #2 Waverider looked into Hank Hall's future to see him fight and die at the hands of Monarch in 2001.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armageddon_2001#cite_note-auto-2 Dove's power interacts with Waverider's allowing him to see a multitude of futures to the point Waverider comments "No matter the future they fought him but never became him,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armageddon_2001#cite_note-auto1-3 Waverider finally touches both Hawk and Dove to see their daughter Unity alter Monarch's mind.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armageddon_2001#cite_note-4

I'd like to know why "how" has been omitted after "No matter" and whether we can omit the verb "be" as in "No matter the future (is)."
Thank you in advance for your help.
