No holes and no gaps vs no holes and gaps

(1) There are no holes and no gaps in the box.

(2) There are no holes and gaps in the box.

My non-native English speaking friends think my first sentence means the box has neither holes nor gaps. They don't think my sentence has the same meaning but they cannot explain why. I thought both of my sentences had the same meaning. What does the second one mean? Thanks.
