My friend asked me if I could interpret some sentences from TOEFL test a few minutes ago. I thought I could, but I'm totally confused over these sentences:

------------------------------------------------------------
About the closest any research has come to supporting the tiredness theory is to confirm that adults yawn more often on weekdays than at weekends, and that school children yawn more frequently in their first year at primary school than they do in kindergarten.
------------------------------------------------------------

I guess that was omitted in the first sentence, I don't think it's proper grammar though, and from the word _'About'_ to the word _'theory'_ could be regarded as a subject. but, I've never heard of such an example.

How can I understand when to leave out 'that'?
