No good !!!

Hi friends,

Could you please explain the use of "no good"... ?

"I began to worry, for I dreamed I had forgotten the words which would open the combination locks. I tried hard to remember but it was no good"

Could you please assist me how can I learn such techniques to understand the sense of the sentence instead of concentrating on common use such as we use good for something useful.

I just understand is that

No good = something is not good

but how come it can be taken for unsuccessful ?
