No font of modesty

Hi teachers,

"NBC's John McEnroe, no font of modesty, was so awed, so humbled by what he'd seen that he berhugged both players as they walked off the court."

>Does it mean John McEnroe have no modesty?

Thank you.

Yes. "Font" here is the archaic word for fountain. McEnroe is the opposite of a fountain of modesty; he has none at all.

And that should be "bearhugged."

Dear Delmobile,

I don't understand - Why John McEnroe had "no modesty at all", one the other hand, yet so humbled? Would you please help me understand?

Thank you.

He's not a modest person (he likes to show off etc.) and yet on this particular occasion he exhibited extreme humbleness.
