"no files were found" vs. "no file was found", which is more natual from the view of a native American?

I'd say that "no file was found" could also be used for dramatic effect, similar to "Not one file was found."
This could apply where multiple files were sought.
If a specific single file were being sought, we'd probably say, "The file was not found."
