No article before this noun?

Hi. Please tell me why there is no article before the words "instruction manual" when I think it is a countable noun. Please see the underlined part. Thank you in advance for your help.

It is a rare combination of politics, religious commentary and instruction manual.

It would also be okay as: "....and an instruction manual." But the sequence, "and an," is difficult to pronounce, so the "an" is left out.
