No article

I am just curious why no article was used in front of the bolded words in the following sentences-they are from the book called Cleopatra.

1. Though Neva and I share the same light skin and blue eyes and could pass as sisters, we are content with our inherited roles: she as maid, I as princess.

2.
Far out to sea the horizon looks bumpy with specks of white.

3. This outing was just an excuse because, truth is, I have plenty of bread-the royal bakers deliver fresh loaves to me twice daily.

Hi, In some ways, articles are quite hard to learn, and hard to teach. But you can learn them, if you are patient. I am just curious why no article was used in front of the bolded words in the following sentences-they are from the book called Cleopatra.
