Nip into place

Hi

A woman was making a haircut for her friend.

All the while her slim brown fingers were making little

curls and nipping them into place.

Does "nip into place" mean she put them where they should be on her head?

It seems strange to me, Newguest. I've always understood it to mean "to cut," as in "nip it in the bud."

But in this case, I don't see how it can mean anything but what you suggest.

If this was not written by a great author, perhaps it's an error.
