nine ways till Sunday

Hi,

Have you heard of this idiom?

I heard that it means "long laborious."

Do people still use it now?

Thank you,

Hi, This idiom comes in various forms, eg seven ways from Sunday, nine ways from Sunday . There is also the version seven ways from sundown , which was also the title of an old (but good) movie. ) They all just mean 'completely', eg I played tennis with Tom and beat him seven ways from Sunday .

  • The version with Seven/Sunday sounds better to me than Nine/Sunday, because of the alliteration.

Hi,

This idiom comes in various forms, eg seven ways from Sunday, nine ways from Sunday. There is also the version seven ways from sundown, which was also the title of an old (but good) movie. (The hero's name was 'Seven-ways-from-sundown Jones', but his friends just called him 'Seven'.)

They all just mean 'completely', eg I played tennis with Tom and beat him

Thank you, Clive. I had someone write to me, "I miss you nine ways till Sunday" and didn't know what that meant. I like your definition of "completely" instead of the previous post which stated it meant, "long and laborious". "Completely" sounds more romantic doesn't it?
thank you for your post.
