Nimravus - what does false sabertoothed mean?

Hi Folks!
i came to know from my dictionary that the word, NIMRAVUS means : False sabertoothed tigers. My query is, what does false sabertoothed refer to ? i know sabertoothed means:Having teeth that resemble sabers. But how come is it false as well as sabertoothed? Or does it means that they are false tigers....please someone help me i'm much confused...thanks!

Hey Learner ! It seems the 'real' sabertoothed tiger (smiledon) is a species that lived on earth later on. The false one (nimravus) was an earlier and different species.

It seems the 'real' sabertoothed tiger (smiledon) is a species that lived on earth later on. The false one (nimravus) was an earlier and different species.

There is this animal that shows up in cartoons or other movies or shows set in the Ice Age with cave men, so people have this image of what a "saber tooth tiger" looked like.
