Nignogs?

I've given up waiting for Ger's reply, so I have to ask what the Irish usage of "nignogs" is. Ger asked if I was still baiting the nignogs.

I understand "nignog" to be a racial epithet. Since I can't imagine anyone ever thinking any of my posts are in any way racist, the reference sticks in my craw.
I can't figure out if Ger has mistaken me for someone else since I've been "gone" for a couple of years, if Ger has imagined some theme that is very unlike me, or if "nignog" is used differently in Donegal. There is the possibility that he meant that I bait the Irish (which I do, and do so with enthusiasm) because I consider them the nignogs of the Western World (which I don't, and would be truly appalled if this was the thought).
Ger has been known to flash a sense of humor - even humour - at times even though he is a tight with his humor as Eddie is with compliments. Has he lost that completely?
Help a Yank out, here.

You understand rightly. It's a precious variant on the traditional N-word. No doubt you remember Jimmy Rabitte's apercu from 'The Commitments'?

SOED5 treats "nig-nog" under two headings, both derogatory, but only one a racial epithet. These definitions suggest treading warily:

What the others say is correct. I didn't see the post in question, but if Ger is Irish then there's nothing more to be said.

But I will.

I saw it about 40 minutes after you posted it, so it hadn't been cancelled by then.

That's pretty close. The post was mistakenly posted here instead of soc.culture.irish, but the Irish in that group *do* deserve to be baited. They manage to hold their own and give as good as they g
