Niche appeal?

Does " niche appeal" mean "professional appeal"?

Context:

Part of the disparity may also arise from using citations as a measurement of quality. Although the most influential ideas often do serve as the basis for future research, highly technical topics with more niche appeal are less likely to be cited regardless of their scientific quality. Likewise, more accessible, “down-market” papers with practical applications may receive more citations, Siler says. “The analogy I use is, ‘Is Nickelback the best band in the world?’ No, not necessarily, but they’ve got that lowest common denominator, middle-of-the-road niche. The best research, in some cases, might be more esoteric.”

From what I can gather, this is a relatively new term referring to a term, item or topic that has strictly limited and specific use or range of interest. A niche is commonly a small space, usually built into a wall for a specific purpose. In the 50s we had a niche (a hollow space with a ledge and an arch) in the wall where we put the telephone.

This appeals to me = I like this, I find this attractive, I find this interesting, I want this.

Niche appeal is simply a term that is what we call "fixed". Much like the term *** appeal: we wouldn't try to substitute 'attractiveness' or any other word for 'appeal'.
