Vocabulary

Niche

given the context below

When studying a natural ecosystem, such as a diverse pristine rainforest we find that there are many living components co-existing in a given area. Each of these components occupies a niche space.

Does the underlined mean "have special characteristics than others"?
If so occupies might also mean "have" in this sense?

Any advice would be very appreciated.

Top answer

'Niche space' is not quite the right phrase, since 'niche' means a 'small space'. All the biology books that I have read use 'niche' alone. A niche is a complex spatial/temporal/behavioral habitat unique to a species to which it is particularly adapted.

  • You could use 'have;' but 'occupy' is a better word choice here.
