NICHE

Can I use the word "niche" instead of the "dog-house"?
Thank you

I don't see them as interchangeable. Doghouse is very specific and, I hope, larger than a niche. Use niche for just a small area, perhaps a little hollow in a wall or stone.

It can also be used to indicate an area of comfort, as in "With his renewed interest in cooking he has found his niche in life."

No. What made you think you might be able to?

It is more poetic than a doghouse and in french "la niche" is a doghouse.

I didn't know that.

"Kennel" is a little better than "doghouse", maybe.

A lot of english words have their origin in french, so I thought maybe this might work also for a niche.

Right. I figured, but, no. Quel dommage. Like I said, maybe "kennel' would be better.

I've studied a lot of French, so I'm glad to learn of this "extended" use of the word in that language.

It's odd what we do with foreign words we bring into English. I remember an announcer on a classical music station comment

True. We have imported a lot of english words in croatian language. This new language we call "Hrenglish". It is terrible to hear. It appears even in newspapers and magazines. Maybe people think they are more worthy if they use a foreign language.... I really think that languages degrade.
"La niche" has various meanings: a small recess in the wall, a doghouse or a pleasantry. "Faire des niches

Hey, don't be like that. We embraced "vampire" and "cravat".

I didn't know that "vampire" is croatian word. "Cravat" is the french word for an embroidered textile that croatian soldiers tied around their necks. They were called "croata" (croatian), hence the word (Francois Chaille is author of a book "La grande histoire de la cravate)... But, yes, you are right... I am old-fashioned... We have imported much more words (specially in informatics) and adapted
