1-On the first of May they said they expected to contact him in the next week.

2-On the first of May they said they expected to contact him over the next week.

3-On the first of May they said they expected to contact him the next week.

In which case:
a-we are talking about the next seven days (from the second of May to the eighth included)
and in which:
b-we are talking about the next calendar week (the week starting on the Sunday following the first of May)
