next vs following

In the following context, could you please tell me if "next"is interchangeable with "following". Is there any difference in nuance? 1)Bicycle rental is available between 3 pm and 1 pm on the next day. 2)Bicycle rental is available between 3 pm and 1 pm on the following day.

Top answer

Yes, but 'following' sounds more mellifluous here to me. Something earlier in the context has to specify a day that is a reference point for 'next/following'. Clive

Can you take 3 pm as a reference point for 'next/following' ?

You need to show what day 'the following day' follows.

Can you show me a sentence?

This juxtaposition makes the announcement confusing.

Bicycle rental period is from 3 pm to the following day at 1 pm.

Clive: Mister Micawber: Thank you very much. "from 3 pm to the following day at 1 pm." That's what I wanted to say.
