Next to/beside

I sat next to/beside a sleeping man in the waiting room.

Is one of them more appropriate in this sentence or are they completely interchangeable?

Top answer

They are not completely interchangeable. It is a matter of context and auctorial judgment, but the result is the same—your derriere was on the bench to one side of a nearby sleeping man. I guess "beside" is smoother than "next to" in general.
