"next to" vs "by"

Which is more common among native english speakers:
The school is next to the post office
The school is by the post office.
Please state the reason why one is more common than he other.

Anonymous Which is more common 'next to' is more specific. It doesn't have anything to do with what's more common. "X is by Y" just says that X is somewhat close to Y, not necessarily next to Y.
