Next time ... vs The next time ....

After reading C. J Sansom's Heartstone I wonder what the rules are for when to use Next time ... and when to use The next time ... A typical example from the book is: Next time I awoke bla bla. To my ears it should have the definate article here also because it desribes a definite time, but I see more and more modern writers skip the "the".

There are no rules. next time and the next time are pretty much in free variation. Personally, I think I use that expression without the when I'm talking about the future.
