Next time or the next time

Hi. Which is correct? Thank you in advance for your help.

1. He went home early, but he didn't do that next time (the next time?)

2. He went home early this time but wasn't sure he would be able to do it next time (the next time?).

I would say 'the next time' in both cases. To my ear, just 'next time' also sounds OK in the second example. CJ
