Next time

I remember being told (or maybe I dreamed it) one thing about "next time", but I am not sure anymore.

1) His house blew up. Hopefully (the) next time he'll remember to turn off the gas. (next time he leaves, next time he is about to do the same thing again)

2) His house blew up. Hopefully he'll remember to turn off the gas (the) next time. (next time he leaves, next time he is about to do the same thing again)

I remeber being told the position of "next time" in sentences like #1 was odd, and it should be put in #2's position. Is it really so? I find it strange because "next time" is like an adverb there, and other adverbs of time would be ok in both positions. Thanks.

There's nothing wrong with the placement of "next time" in sentence number one. Adverb placement is more flexible than would be indicated sometimes. It's not odd.

  • We could say there is a such thing as "primary adverb placement" and "secondary adverb placement", with primary referring to the most typical place an adverb might occur in a sentence.
  • However, this is something that can be rather subjective at times, in my opinion.
