Next of kin

Hi.

What is the difference between immediate relative and next of kin?

Are they synonymous?

Thank you very much

Yes and no. An immediate relative would include your father, but he is not next of kin in a legal sense, which is how it is often used: your wife or child is.

Thanks Mister Micawber.

So I assume that mother and siblings are considered immediate relative but not next of kin.

Am I right?

Thanks
