Next Friday or Coming Friday

Today is 24/12 Monday. Do you say next Friday or coming Friday when referring to 28/12? I heard coming Friday frequently in my region, but an Englishman told me (a long time ago) that it is wrong and it should be next Friday. He also said the Friday after is called Friday week. But in real life, I have never heard people saying Friday week. I am puzzled.

28/12 is the coming Friday. Jan 4/08 is next Friday. Friday week is the Friday after the next one (Jan 11/08). I think that’s how we use those terms here.

After reading the previous posts, I came to the conclusion that there is NO consensus. Next Friday means different things for different people, even native speakers. There are even contradicting claims on what is the majority's interpretation among the British. And for some people, it also depends on which day of the week when it is spoken. It's unbelieveable that such a common

Hi Pter,

Yup! There is no consensus. Unless "tomorrow" is Friday, and then "next Friday" is pretty clear, you're better of being specific. However, today (Dec 24) if you said "this coming Friday" there is NO doubt that you mean Dec 28. If you said "next Friday" it could mean Dec 28 or the first one in January. I can't agree with Budhaheart what "Friday week" means the second one in Januar

What about just this Friday? It seems to be commonly used.

Yes, that's fine.

Don't say it on Thursday.

'This Friday' is common here in Virginia, but many other usages mentioned above have caused misunderstanding, sometimes with serious consequences. Be specific as to the date, especially when it concerns important relationships, or job interviews.
