Next day without 'the'

Hi

Would you say that these are perfectly natural?

I went to bed with a terrible headache, and, next day, I went to the doctor. [informal]

I went to bed with a terrible headache, and, the next day, I went to the doctor. [formal]

That first one might be British. It doesn't ring any bells for me here in the U.S. I'm not aware of anyone here who would say that without "the".
