Next day vs on the next day

Could you help me, please?

What is the difference between "next day" and "on the next day" when we use them to show when something happens? For example:

Next day I called him.

On the next day I called him.

They are both possible. I would probably say "I called him the next day." You use this rather than "tomorrow" when everything is in the past. You can also use "the following day" and "the day after that".
