Take the next turning left.
I'm not working next week.

Is there any grammar explanation why the article "the" is needed in "the next turning", but redundant in "next week"?

Hi I'd say there is no grammar explanation, there. It's difficult to say when 'the' is important to us and when it isn't We can reverse it, in the sentences you give: - Are you sure this is the way to the shopping centre? - Of course, it's next turning left - Can we go on holiday first week in August?

  • - No, but I'm not working the next week It is to do with pointing something out, but I don't believe there's a grammatical rule for it Dave

We can reverse it, in the sentences you give:

- Are you sure this is the way to the shopping centre?
- Of course, it's next turning left

- Can we go on holiday first week in August?
- No, but I'm not working the next week
