newspaper or newspapers?

Good day! could someone help me with this? I have been contemplating over these two words. In various sentences I've read it says:
1. American newspapers
2. Italian newspaper

Any difference or rules betweene the two? Will be glad to hear from you. thanks

1. American newspapers (plural - there are many newspapers)
2. Italian newspaper (singular - there is one newpaper.)

Examples:
American newspapers reported yesterday that President Obama would not be meeting with Russian President Putin. (The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angles Times, The Times-Picayune etc.)

I read the same report in an Italian newspaper.

Could you help me more. Here is the whole context of the book I am reading.

Mr. and Mrs. DiCarlo live in an old Italian neighborhood in new York City. They speak a litlle English, but usually they speak Italian. They read the Italian newspaper They listen to radio programs......and so on.

Joe lives in a small suburb outside the city. He speaks a little Italian, but usually he speaks English. He reads American newspapers. ....and so on

*** with the above given examples...is the singularity and plurality rules apply? can I use them interchangeable? thank you in advance.

This refers to the one newspaper which serves the residents of the Italian neighborhood. It is in Italian. There are not enough customers to support more than one Italian-language newspaper.
