Vocabulary

new territories as a playground as well as a laboratory

What is the highlighted sentence referring to? Did really the first European settlers of America change new territories to playgrounds and laboratories or is it a metaphor?

Context:

This may be an in-joke – these artists are the last you would expect to be in at the kill – but it is a reminder of early natural historians, who were able to explore new habitats in the wake of an expanding empire which used the new territories as a playground as well as a laboratory.
