New teacher - Learning grammar

Question

Hello everyone!I have decided to do my TEFL course so I can begin teaching English. I didn't realise as a native English speaker how little of grammar I know and understand. I really don't feel like the TEFL course is helping me with this. If anyone has any tips (books,websites) that might help. I really want to be prepared for this!Many thanks,Nikki

Dear Nikki,

I can see how getting the grasps of grammar can be challenging at first, but it is a necessary step to be more confident when it comes to answering your students' questions.

My personal recommendations as for what concerns grammar are the following:
- The British council website has a good Grammar section that can be used both for studying and for reference: http://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en/grammar-and-vocabulary

- This website has a very useful Q&A system that comes in handy when you are investigating a particular issue, but just randomly browsing it can also be very educational if you have some spare time: http://english.stackexchange.com/

As for books,I found Grammar for English Language Teachers by http://www.amazon.de/Martin-Parrott/e/B001IZX36E/ref=dp_byline_cont_book_1 (Cambridge) very useful. Although I was trained at school and university, and was thus familiar with most of its content, I found its extremely simple approach very useful because it gave me simple examples and explanations that I could then use with my students. I can imagine that that same approach will help you getting the basics and then you can work on more technical vocabulary (that is unnecessary with most students, but can help you to get a better understanding of more subtle differences).

Although I have never used it myself, I also heard good reviews about Practical English Usage by Michael Swan (it seemed to me though that it is aimed at teachers more than at grammar learners).
