New ground of existence?

Hi! everyone.
Could you tell me what the coloured phrase mean?
(From my textbook-Question-answer exercise of 'To err is human') it refers to "Trial and error method"
-The flexible human-life pattern opens out several different choices to us.We can select courses open to us."Sometimes there are ten, even twenty different ways to go," and all of them except one way is wrong(at best in scientific matters). This wide choice lifts us up to a new ground of existence.
Could you rephrase the coloured phrase to help me understand it?
Thanks!
