Never gave up

Can I say,

(a) The hare ran fast. Suddenly, he felt tired so he found a shady tree to sleep under it. It never gave up.

(b) The tortoise had never given up,so it crawled sloiwly behind.

Can I say,

(a) The hare ran fast. Suddenly, he felt tired so he found a shady tree to sleep under it. He It never gave up.
Say 'it' or 'he', but be consistent.

(b) The tortoise had never given up,so it crawled slowly behind.
This is OK, but you could just say ''never gave up'.
