neither, nor

Hi,

Let us assume I have a pen and a crayon in my hand and my friend wants to borrow to write calligraphy. In response to his request for a pen or a crayon, my response should be what?

1. Neither pen nor crayon will help you write calligraphy.

2. Neither a pen nor a crayon will help you write calligraphy.

I am asking this because sometimes I am seriously dithering between the choice of putting the article and not putting it. How are they different?

No need to dither; it is an unimportant difference here-- both sentences are OK.
