I accept that I am influenced by my own culture, but I feel that the fact of a bed being too small to accommodate eight people is not normally something we'd comment on.

It's "family of eight to sleep ...". One definition of every cardinal number is that many people. "People" is redundant with "family".

I don't know that it's necessarily redundant. The bed might well be large enough for a family of eight rabbits to sleep in!
