Negligence for failing

Hi, teachers. Please help me.

"She was found guilty of negligence for failing to pay due attention required in driving a motor vehicle."

I think this sentence is strange. If "...negligence for failing..." is changed to "...negligence for paying ...", the sentence seems to add up. My opinion is wrong?

Top answer

No, the original is correct and yours is reversed. She failed to pay attention, and that is a negligent act.

You might look at it this way:

She was found guilty of the crime called "negligence". This happened because she failed to pay attention while driving.

I think you are mistakenly thinking that she neglected to fail to do something -
