negative questions

Hi, a couple of hours ago I read the following post in another thread:
"Hello, I have the same problem with my friend when she ask me in a negative form, but when I don't agree wirh her she start arguing with me, but one day, we had had her brother at home, and she asked me if I want to come with them but in different way like this.
aren't you coming with us, and I had answered with no, that's mean I will coming, but she didn't understand my answer. to be honest her brother is very clever and he realized right the way may answer and he told her, he will coming. and she asked me way I said no and I told her because you asked me in a negative form.
even though after that day, she's still asking me in a negative form and she couldn't catch my answer if I agreed with her or no."

Then I asked if this post is correct, cause I read different things on how to answer negative questions. Unfortunately the post and my answer/question got deleted and the thread had been closed. But I am still interested in getting an answer. Emotion: smile

Her brother has the right approach.

Really? Her brothers approach would be:
Question: Aren't you coming with us?
Answer: No, I am coming with you.

I always thought it would be like this:
Question: Aren't you coming with us?
Answer: Yes, I am coming with you.

No. You answer the negative the same as you answer the affirmative.

Are you coming with us? Yes. (I'm coming with you.)
Are you coming with us? No. (I am not coming with you.)
Aren't you coming with us? Yes. (I'm coming with you.)
Aren't you co

You didn't tel me her brother said 'the word 'no'..
You said herbrother is very clever and he realized right the way may answer and he told her, he will coming.

He used extra words to clarify his meaning.
Good answers are
eg Yes, I am coming.
eg I am coming.
eg I'll come.

Thank you. But now you and Clive tell something complete different? Whom to trust? I am sorry, but it's hard to decide whom to trust.

I did not write the text, I interpret it like this:

Girl asks: Question: Aren't you coming with us?
Author answers: No
Brother interprets it like Author want's to come with them.

So if you say her Brother guessed it right, then it is like this:
Girl asks: Question: Aren't you coming with us?
Author answers: No, I am coming with you.

Correct?

I don't think the answers are different. I think you are having trouble understanding the answers.

My answer had nothing to do with what "her brother" said because I couldn't even understand what he said from

Oh OK, I interpret the text like this (I didn't write it):

Girl asks: Question: Aren't you coming with us?
Author (want's to come with them) answers: No
Brother interprets it like Author want's to come with them.

So I guess the Author answered wrong (he should have answered yes) and therefore also the brother was wrong, cause if he was really clever, he would have thought

The brother's interpretation is wrong.

OK, thank you.
So lets sum it up:

Storyline:
Girl asks: Question: Aren't you coming with us?
Author answers (want's to come with them): No

Author answered wrong (he should have answered yes), Brother therefore should have thought author does not want to come with them.

correct?
