Can "a" and "b" be used in response to the original statement?
If one wasn't contradicting something that was said beforehand, one would obviously not use "a" or "b" I understand that "a" and "b" do not mean the same and have practically opposite meanings. But the first sentence in both is the same and has virtually the same function.
