Needs help with these questions

I was stuck on a few sentences when I was reading a novel called Twilight.
1. "He turned his attention back to his makeshift top."(before this sentence, the guy was sitting with a girl at the cafeteria twirling his soda cap.) What could makeshift top here mean?

2."He smiled, to show me how little stock he put in the histories."(The boy was telling a girl some ancient stories about his tribe, both were sitting on driftwood. ) I guess it means the boy told the girl what he knew about those stories in old times?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.
