Hi there!
Can you tell me the difference between "needn't" and "don't have to"? When do we use them? Is it related to internal/external obligation?
And please, I know more often it is a stylistic matter but don't write "it's only a matter of choice" answers because I know they relatively mean the same thing. I'm not concerned about 'language evolving'. I want to exactly know when to use which of these.
Thanks in advance!

Use "needn't" in British English. As an American, I use "needn't" only when talking with British friends, and even then, only rarely. I regard it as somewhat old-fashioned and stilted.
