Needed help with a couple of words.

What does "smug" mean here? Does it not refer to the driver actually saying something or .?
Moreover, this sentece

Can the word "tension" in the same sentence be properly replaced with "worries"?

Anonymous The driver smug that they made the deadline with two minutes to spare. This is not a good sentence - it is missing the main verb. Smug is an adjective, meaning happy and proud of himself.

Here are some ways to write this. Simple past is fine in the dependent clause. I prefer past perfect to emphasize that the action was completed.

One of the causes of tension is worry, so yes, your replacement would be OK. There are other causes of tension, such as having a stressful job, or being caught in a traffic jam.
