Besides civil war and corruption, high rates of export are affecting developing countries according to Tugde. Instead of using food production to combat hunger among the poor, food production is used for export to First World countries. Yet, First World countries have already enough food and are even market by an overproduction of food. As a result of overproduction, there still remains enough food to feed people in poor countries. At this point it becomes clear that GM does not help to combat world hunger at all. In fact, GM is widening the gap between the First and the Third World and the gap between the capitalists and the poor.
By juxtaposing the positive and negative long-term effects of GM, it can be concluded that a critical attitude is needed towards GM. While the negative long-term effects tend to dominate so far, it is imperative to make sure that the positive long-term effects of GM outweigh the negative ones.
In fact, the negative long-term effects of GM can be shun successfully provided that scientists learn to use the methods of GM wisely. Thus, unhealthy genetically modified food can be shun by injecting more nutrients into organism. The widening gap between rich and poor can be shrunk by providing food that is equally distributed between the First and the Third world.
