Statement of Teaching Philosophy

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” (Laozi)

The above quotation from Laozi, a famous Chinese philosopher, guides my teaching philosophy. I firmly believe that my role as a university teacher is to not only teach students knowledge (give them fish) but more importantly help them to develop life-long learning skills and critical thinking skills (teach to fish).

I expect that my students have different background and a variety of levels of desire for learning. I will try to inspire them by helping them find topics closely related to their practice. The first question I ask when I design my courses is that what situations the students will encounter in the daily work and what professional knowledge and skills they need to solve the problems. My responsibility is to make sure the knowledge I transfer to them is useful.

I believe our students as public health leaders need skills in critical thinking and analysis, including indentifying relevant health issues, collecting key data and information, and making decision and choosing appropriate solutions based on scientific evidence. My role is to assist them to develop these skills by using problem-oriented teaching approach and case studies. In courses I have taught, I presented environmental health cases in small discussion groups, asked students questions, and demonstrated my won critical thinking skills for these cases. The goal is to help students to develop life-long learning skills and the capacity of applying what they learn to real situations.

In summary, my ultimate goal in teaching is to provide students key knowledge and tools required for their public health practice and help them to develop critical thinking skills which will guide them apply their knowledge and skills to their daily works.

Do you think I am a native speaker? I'm not quite sure, some countries think I am, while others scoff at me.

hmm... why can't I edit my previous post?
