NEED - with or without object

Hi, I need some help with the verb need Emotion: smile

Is the following sentence correct? Can I use need at the end of a sentence without a direct object?

My best friend always helps me when I need.

If not, which one is better?

My best friend always helps me when I need it.
My best friend always helps me when I need help.
