Need to do VS need to

Hello....

a. You need not do it because others did.

b. You don’t need to do it because others did.

**********

I'd like to know how the two sentences sound to native ears....

Is it like below?

a. means “Even if others did it, you don’t have to do it after them”.

b. means “Because others already did it, there is no need for you to do it”.

Or...
On top of that, can a. and b. also mean as below?

a. means “Because others already it, you don’t have to do it”.

b. means “Even if others did it, there is no need for you to do it after them”.
