Hi teachers,

The two girls have become friends and because of progeria look strikingly similiar.

Does the sentence need "they" before look?

Thanks

tinanam0102 Does the sentence need "they" before look? No, but if you don't use 'they', it might be a good idea to use commas thus: The two girls have become friends and, because of progeria, look strikingly similiar. Or change the order thus: The two girls have become friends and look strikingly similiar because of progeria.

  • No, but if you don't use 'they', it might be a good idea to use commas thus: The two girls have become friends and, because of progeria, look strikingly similiar.
  • Or change the order thus: The two girls have become friends and look strikingly similiar because of progeria.
  • _________________________ But even though you can leave out 'they', in my opinion it doesn't sound as good as when you use 'they'.
  • The two girls have become friends, and they look strikingly similiar because of progeria.

Hi CalifJim,

Thanks for your help. You always give me something more.

Does the name of the syndromes or diseases need the before them?

Do you say "I have the encephalitis / cirrhosis"?

Thanks

No! Absolutely not! Not in the general case.

I hesitated to write that part about the because normally we don't use the with diseases. (Exception: I hope I don't catch the flu this year.
