Does being adopted by a gay couple harm a child? Or does sitting in foster home after foster home, potentially being abused harm a child? Over 520,000 children sit in foster care every day. Around 50 percent of those children are awaiting adoption. Any couple/person can reproduce weather they are financially, mental or physically stable. They are not required to go through an evaluation to tell if they are capable of raising a child. Their home is not inspected to decide if it is child safe, they are not required to be sober, have a job, or even have a roof over their head. Yet thousands of gay couple has to go through extensive home visits and interviews to decide if they are fit to be parents. And even more cannot adopt at all.

14,100 children live in foster homes with a gay couple. If gay couples were banned from being foster parents around 14 thousand children would be displaced and it would cost the nation approximately $87 to $130 million. Right now only three states have bans on same-sex couples fostering children, Utah, Arkansas and Nebraska. What makes it acceptable for a gay couple to be a foster parent, yet not be allowed to permanently adopt children? Children sit in foster home on average of 36 months. Every state except Florida and Arkansas allows a single gay or lesbian person to adopt a child. 10 states, including the District of Columbia allow same sex partners to adopt. Four states strictly prohibit same sex partners to adopt. A steady two person family is considered the best environment for a child. Yet only single gays and lesbians are permitted to adopt in most states.

The sexual orientation of a person does not determine that they will or will not be a suitable parent. Children raised in same-sex parent households are shown to have no difference than those raised in a heterosexual household. There is no difference in a child’s self-esteem, social adjustment, or behavior. It has been that couples in same-sex relationships are more stable, and share more of the household responsibilities.

By banning same-sex couple adoption, the rights of the parents are being taken away. In the case of separation neither the child nor the parent would have visitation rights. The child would not be able to claim inheritances, social security or insurance benefits. If the parent were to decease, the parent would essentially have no rights to the child. They wouldn’t be able to enroll the child in school. They would not be able to make medical decisions for the child. Same-sex couples with adoption rights also do not receive the same tax benefits.

Let’s start putting the best interest of the child first. By banning same-sex adopting thousands of children eagerly awaiting adoption will never get that chance. Millions of loving same-sex families eagerly hoping for a child of their own will never get that chance. Is it better for the child to sit in foster homes for months to years on end, when they can have the opportunity to be accepted into a family and finally have a home?
